STRAIGHT-JACKET

PLOT:

Guy Stone is blissfully closeted, picking up tricks for one-night-stands, while capturing the country's heart as "America's most eligible bachelor". However, Guy's carefully managed façade collapses when he comes up for the lead in S.R.O. studio's version of Ben-Hur. Things turn sour for the film idol when a fellow actor, Freddie Stevens, decides to steal the lead in Ben-Hur from Guy by taking a picture of Guy exiting a gay bar. Freddie plans to out Guy to the world and ruin his career. Jerry, Guy's repressed lesbian ball-bustingly ambitious agent, connives to cover up the impending outing and ensure Guy the role in Ben-Hur by marrying her client off with great fanfare to the studio head's secretary, Sally, who just happens to also be a slavishly devoted Guy Stone fan. However, Sally isn't aware the marriage is a sham.To avoid his adoring new bride as much as possible, Guy has Jerry sign him onto the next available film, which turns out to be 'Blood Mine' — a disastrously arch pro-union film about the corrupt goings on at a coal mine. The young, idealistic, and terribly handsome writer of the novel that the film is based on, Rick Foster, quickly gets roped into convoluting the plot of this already-bad adaptation of his heartfelt book largely because of a chance meeting between him and the film's star, Guy. The attraction the two men feel for one another is instantaneous and propels the rest of the plot forward.

TRAMA:

Il film, basato su una commedia dello stesso regista, è ambientato nella Hollywood degli anni '50 e racconta di un bellissimo ragazzo, star del cinema, che sposa la segretaria di uno studio per nascondere meglio la sua omosessualità. Lo stile del film è quello delle commedie da camera tipiche di quegli anni. L'attore hollywoodiano Guy Stone spende gran parte del suo tempo a posare come star per i media che lo inseguono ovunque, e quindi a nascondere in tutti i modi le sue vere tendenze sessuali. Una sera viene però scoperto da un'attore rivale che lo fotografa in un club gay. Queste immagini arrivano sulla stampa e mettono in serio pericolo la sua carriera. Decide allora di sposare una bella segretaria degli studios, Sally, che non sa niente della sua omosessualità e non le sembra vero di poter diventare la moglie del suo attore preferito. Innamorata cotta di Guy, Sally non si preoccupa di chiedergli perchè non la porti mai fuori o perchè abbia scelto di dormire in camere separate. Vive ugualmente felice accontentandosi di quello che Guy le offre sicura di stare vivendo un sogno bellissimo. Ma l'inevitabile accade e Guy presto l'abbandona dopo essersi innamorato di uno sceneggiatore che peraltro ha una coscienza sociale assai diversa dalla sua. Nonostante le diversità di vedute i due uomini formano una coppia assai solida anche se a volte un po' artificiosa a causa della fatica per mantenerla segreta, considerando che siamo anche nel pieno della caccia ai "rossi"...
