PLOT:
Nicolo Donato’s melodrama "Brotherhood" digs into the collective psyche of a Danish neo-Nazi group whose brightest recruit and biggest potential star, Lars, is a semi-closeted gay man with masculinity issues. An up-and-coming army officer, Lars abruptly abandons the military when his expected promotion to master sergeant is denied because of rumors that he has made drunken passes at fellow soldiers. .The closest thing Lars finds to the army is a neo-Nazi group that harasses Pakistani immigrants, beats up homosexuals and idolizes Hitler. The film makes an important point about so-called brotherhood. Within the group, the confusion between rough, homoerotic fellowship among straight men and homosexuality (or the threat of it) sets up a paranoid electric charge. With the exception of the leaders, Ebbe and Michael a k a Fatty, who adopts Lars as his protégé, the brotherhood’s other members are mostly cowering, overgrown boys flexing their tattooed muscles and playing tough guy. The inevitable happens when, under orders, the sullen, secretive Jimmy , one of the most vicious attackers in a gay bashing that opens the film, takes Lars as his assistant to Ebbe’s shambling seaside house for tutoring. Very quickly their suppressed mutual attraction explodes into a sexual relationship .When Jimmy’s gaunt, heroin-shooting younger brother, Patrick, catches Jimmy and Lars embracing, he is beside himself. The strong ensemble acting lets you feel the quivering vulnerability under the characters’ thuggish facades. Beneath their spasms of violence and rowdiness lie buried sobs of fear and self-doubt. Until the very end, when the plot takes too slick a turn, "Brotherhood"is without sentimentality.
TRAMA:
Allontanato dall'esercito danese in seguito ad alcune dicerie sul suo conto, Lars torna a casa dei genitori, che non hanno mai fatto molto per dimostrargli amore e stima. Poco dopo, quasi senza volerlo, entra a far parte di un gruppo di neonazisti. E quando si trasferirà nella casetta vicino al mare che Jimmy (David Dencik), uno dei "camerati", sta ristrutturando, tra i due nascerà qualcosa di più che una semplice, virile amicizia. Mettere d'accordo nazismo e omosessualità, lo sanno loro per primi, non è però cosa di questo mondo.
Atteso come il film scandalo del Festival, Brotherhood dell'italo-danese Nicolo Donato (esordio al lungometraggio per il grande schermo) mantiene in qualche modo le promesse della vigilia ma, cosa ben più importante, sorprende per coraggio e capacità di tenere a bada retorica e luoghi comuni. Sulla falsariga di Yossi and Jagger (film del 2002 diretto da Eytan Fox ed incentrato sul rapporto omosessuale di due soldati israeliani), Brotherhood - racconto di "individuazione", prima che di formazione - parte da premesse se possibile ancora più estreme, provando a contrapporre l'illogicità di un amore viscerale ed impossibile alla rigida ottusità di un microcosmo formato sull'ideologia del Terzo Reich e composto da picchiatori omofobi e razzisti: "I froci non ci piacciono", dirà lo stesso Jimmy a Lars dopo una notte d'amore. Scoprire di essere nulla più, nulla di diverso rispetto al bersaglio di tante azioni passate sarà drammaticamente doloroso, ma necessario. Così come chiudere il film in una stanza d'ospedale, sperando in una catarsi che non preveda, almeno per questa volta, la morte.
